The Flip Grip, a handy little piece of plastic, that allows you to keep blasting away foes on the go while playing your favorite SHMUPS or Bullet Hells on the Switch while still retaining that nice vertical orientation a fair amount of these games allow.
Right off the bat I will come out & say that the Flip Grip probably is not for those that are not enthusiasts of that specific genre. While it is fairly inexpensive at 12$ plus whatever shipping option you choose, it is a very limited in options accessory. Outside of mostly SHUMPS, Bullets Hells & a couple of other games like Downwell, the Atari Flashback Collection & the like, usage is somewhat limited. To further whittle down your options, games with a counterclockwise orientation will not work well for this due to design reasons. I am probably doing a bad job selling you on the idea of this accessory, but the amount of games that allow TATE is low & the ones that don’t line up with the Flip Grip lowers it even more.
In a simple box comes the simple device, a cute sticker & a credit card sized bit of plastic with instructions that doubles as a kickstand. The Flip Grip itself has 4 felt pads & a button tab that helps it hold on to your Switch. Overall it is a snug fit & you will probably sooner smack it against something than the thing ever letting go of your Switch without a fight. The Switch itself only goes one way & it will be evident if you are doing it wrong. The Joy Cons themselves slide in on the outside rails much like they would on the Switch, holding on securely. Be aware that with everything in place you will not be able to access the USB port, the volume & the Power buttons, though the latter of which can be adjusted through the in-system menu. It also does cover part of the exhaust vent but the Switch remains pretty damned cool so overheating will never be an issue due to the Flip Grip itself. A small price to pay for some good vertical fun.
All in all, the Flip Grip is a must have for fans of bullet hells, shumps & the like that want to continue racking up their score while on the go. Simple in design & usage, sturdy & lightweight it is just about perfect with its only “flaws” being that it is a limited usage item, though by no faults of its own & being limited to only 1 color, which hopefully in the future we can see a wider selection in that regard. In any case, I recommend it.
