Monsters N Girls (R18+) Review

Monsters ‘N Girls is a 2D action platformer heavily inspired by Capcom’s arcade hit called Ghosts & Goblins. In this title, we find our kingdom under siege by an army of succubus that are hell-bent on sexing up all the males and adding the females to their demonic ranks. As a knight of the land, simply known as Sir Satou, our character takes it upon himself to purge this evil from his home.

We are then given the choice to select either Normal or Arcade mode. The only difference in Arcade is that you just have three lives to get through the entire game. This may not be as difficult as its inspiration, but it certainly is no slacker. You’ll likely want to go for Normal due to having an infinite amount of lives to try to conquer the game, at least for your first playthrough. After your choice, we are quickly thrust straight into the action and can begin our journey to slay the queen succubus.

Our weapon against this legion of foes is our trusty lance, which we throw, not melee with. We can toss an unlimited amount of them across the screen to defeat an enemy from a distance. The crucial thing here is that there can only be two of them on the screen at once. You do not want to be spamming the attack button and find yourself defenseless when you need it most. Despite the full set of armor, we can only take a single hit before it crumbles apart. If we take another, that’s the end for our character. Weak and defeated, the nearest demon/monster girl will sexually abuse him in a unique pixel animation for that creature type.

The stakes are high when even our knightly chastity is on the line. Every enemy poses a serious threat due to the low amount of damage you can take. Losing will set you back to the start of that stage, of which there are ten in total. They are pretty short, so returning to where you failed last time will never take long. Even if you didn’t start that level with any armor, you’ll find that dying always starts you off with some. That, in combination with the shortness of a stage, makes the urge to keep trying near irresistible. I wouldn’t call this game brutal in its difficulty, but it will test your skills and chew you apart if you go in recklessly.

Well, at least in Normal mode. Arcade with its three life limit is beyond my ability, so there may actually be another level or some secret unlock if you manage to defeat it in that mode. Whatever the case, the ten stages on offer are all pretty good. Each possess their own themes and it will constantly throw new enemies your way that match it. Like what would you expect to find in a cave full of spider’s webs? That’s right. Spiders with big anime breasts on their upper-halves and the proper parts for human baby-making. UwU

In Normal, the game saves by itself. You can exit at the start of any level and retain your place when you boot it back up. When on the overworld, you can even retread and play old levels again. That is pretty handy for practicing levels you have trouble on to get yourself ready for Arcade mode. Or you can simply use it to reach some of the foes unique to that stage and purposely lose to them to see their unique sex animations. It feels more like a punishment when you are actually trying to win, only to get nailed by a stray projectile towards the end of a stage and find yourself being ridden on like a mechanical bull by a harpy girl. You can skip all of that entirely by pressing enter when you take a hit and lose, in order to get right back into the action.

Speaking of controls, there is no gamepad support. You may want to use an input mapper if you are not used to using a keyboard for these types of games. It is dead simple in its commands. You use the cursor keys to move, Z to jump, and X to attack. They are quite responsive and I never found myself blaming the controls for my untimely deaths. This title hasn’t been translated to English. You won’t be able to understand the intro as it is in Japanese. Simply read the store page for some context. After that, there is no further dialogue or text to be found. It is pure gameplay from then on out.

There is no gallery mode to view the sex animations. You will have to jump into a stage and lose to your monster girl of choice in order to see them again. It is all of the femdom variety, your character will be completely dominated to their will. That brings us to the boss fights. Some stages will feature quite the vicious monster girl protecting the exit. You must defeat them in order to pass, and losing will result in much the same way it always does. Our boi Satou must have impregnated half of the enemy forces by now. Joking aside, these bosses are no pushovers. They always provoke the good ole “Oh sh** :D” moment when you reach the end of a level and spot one of them guarding the exit.

As you make your way through the levels, you may encounter some chests. Treasure chests I mean, look away from the monster girls :p. Within them, there can be one of two things. A unique wizard enemy that will blast you pretty soon after opening it, or a set of golden armor. The golden armor allows you to charge your attack and be able to destroy projectiles with your lances. It also increases the fire rate, allowing you to throw many more at once. This gives you a great deal of power, yet like with the normal armor, a single hit will leave you in nothing but your undergarments.

Monsters N Girls is a blast to play. I wholly enjoyed my trek through its ten stages and its fair difficulty. The addition of the sexual pixel animation upon defeat was also an interesting touch to this otherwise faithful recreation. Its H content is decent, but with the lack of a gallery mode or way of viewing it outside of actual gameplay, it feels like a secondary feature or a nice bonus. This title can more than stand on its own with how well-made and tuned it is, you will be spending quite a few hours if you take up the challenge of beating Arcade mode. At the price of 6 US Dollars, Monsters N Girls definitely deserves a spot in your collection. If you are a fan of Ghosts & Goblins or Action Platformers, this is well worth your time, whether you enjoy lewd content in your games or not.
