Loli Heroine Magical Gun-Gun is a beat ’em up in where we play as a Japanese schoolgirl named Sato that has found herself transported to a new world. In it, she has great magical abilities that can change the flow of the war for the king who summoned her. She has no interest in any of this and simply wants to go home. With the king being the only one who can grant that wish, she sets off to destroy the opposing armies.
All of the action takes place on a single screen and our task is to defeat all of the incoming foes to take on the boss of that level. We have two methods of attack. One is to smack your foe with your staff and the other to cast a powerful spell that damages everything around you. This spell completely refills every couple of seconds and one-shots anything that isn’t a boss. It also restores some of your health to boot. Challenge is not something you will find in this title due to that. This is more of a casual affair that has you power-tripping against hordes of foes.
Attacking an enemy will send them spiraling a couple of feet and that usually results in them crashing into their allies. It is quite satisfying knocking down a group of foes like bowling pins. You also have access to a jump. Jumping makes you invulnerable while still in the air and is really useful to avoid attacks. If an enemy manages to land a hit on you, you will be knocked down and every foe will gather around just waiting for you to get back up. That is very dangerous since there are no invincibility frames from being attacked or getting up. All the foes will pile on and pummel you in this defenseless state, which is where jumping comes in handy if you don’t have your spell at the ready.
On the top right you will see the number of foes you have to defeat before the boss shows up. Bosses are really underwhelming. They are essentially a common foe, but shaded purple and given a health bar. Other than that, they fight exactly the same and are knocked around just as easily. There are six stages in total, and only five have a boss fight. The last level will not have one, sadly and disappointingly enough. Nothing spices up the gameplay. It ends just the same as it started, for better or worse. You’ll find that it does start to pack a bit of a bite with the number of enemies it starts throwing at you towards the end, though it is still perfectly manageable thanks to your overpowered spell.
If you somehow find yourself taking a ton of damage, your clothes will rip and you’ll find yourself naked. Lose all of your health then you will be treated to a short visual novel like scene where your character is sexually abused. Each of the six levels contains there own unique events and CGs. It is unlikely you will see any of them if you don’t lose on purpose, however. All of them are merely acceptable. I like the lead character’s design, though the rest of the art for the CG is pretty basic. There are only six different images overall, neither facial expressions nor anything else changes during the H scenes. At the end, it only adds a semen overlay. Our protagonist is fully voice acted and the English text while a bit iffy, is understandable. That does help matters some, yet I won’t recommend getting this title for the H content alone.
There is a gallery mode that is unlocked once you beat the game. It only showcases the CGs. To see the actual event, you still need to lose at the specific level for the scene you want. Just seeing the artwork alone is underwhelming. Having an option to play out the scene in its entirety would have been the way to do it. When viewing the artwork in the Gallery mode, they don’t even have backgrounds, it is just pure black. You are far better off just making the effort to lose in a stage than to use the gallery. There is a cheat code to teleport to any stage. On the main menu, place your mouse cursor over the “Start” option, hold the Tab key, and then press 1-6 depending on which level you want.
One of the things I liked about this title is that they add a new enemy every stage. It will have a decent amount of variety of foes to slay by the end of it. At the start of each level, you also get a bit of story. This won’t win any awards, yet is interesting enough in the latter half of the game. Our character is quite the interesting protagonist. She doesn’t care in the slightest about the events around her. Her desire to go back home is the only thing running through her head and we are far from what can be called a hero.
The lack of a full screen was a bummer. It runs at around 720p from what I can tell, and you can’t even resize the window. In total, Magical Gun Gun lasted me around half an hour. With the lack of difficulty modes and the subpar hentai, this isn’t a title possessing much replay value. That being said, it isn’t terrible by any means and was a fun way to spend a lunch break. It ticks that Dynasty Warriors vibe with how ridiculously overpowered you are compared to the common foot soldier. There is something oddly satisfying about tossing your foes all over the stage and detonating your area of effect spell when they think they have you surrounded. Gameplay lacks challenge and is both stiff feeling & dead simple, but it’s fun. If you are after a casual beat ’em up to kill some time with, this may be right up your alley. Just do not get it solely for the hentai, or you will most likely be deeply disappointed.
